Visit Caribbean
The Caribbean is a part of the Americas that includes the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some of which have just the Caribbean Sea as their boundary; others share it with the North Atlantic Ocean), and the surrounding shores. The area lies northeast of South America, east of Central America, and southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American continent. More than 700 islands, islets, reefs, and cays make up this area, which is mostly located on the Caribbean Plate. The Greater Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago on the north, and the Lesser Antilles and on the south and east, define the eastern and northern boundaries of the Caribbean Sea (which includes the Leeward Antilles). Together with the adjacent Lucayan Archipelago, they make up the West Indies.
Due to their political and cultural links to the area, the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, the Guayana Region, and Amapá in Brazil) and Margarita Island are sometimes placed on the mainland.
